What is the CRPD?
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is an international human rights treaty to protect the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.
(There also is an inaccurate translation of the Convention into Japanese that can be found on the homepage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, but let’s read the English version instead.
As of 2025-01-01, the CRPD has 191 state parties.
The implementation of the Convention by the states parties is being monitored by the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, a body of independent experts.
Optional Protocol
The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD-OP) is a side-agreement to the Convention that establishes an individual communications mechanism that allows persons claiming to be victims of a violation of the Convention by a State party to directly complain to the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
Japan has not signed or ratified it.
